JOHNNY Depp was a wife-beater who repeatedly made Amber Heard fear for his life, the High Court was told today.
The 57-year-old was today called “a hopeless addict who repeatedly lost control” as the penultimate day in the trial began.
Sasha Wass QC, who is representing News Group Newspapers, today told the court Depp had “irrational mood swings and abnormal behavioural patterns” which he had named “The Monster”.
She said that Depp had accepted he had kicked and punched property, adding: “Where someone is so impaired, it’s only a small step to go from assaulting inanimate objects to people.
“Any distinction between hitting an object and hitting a person are meaningless… he was so intoxicated he would not have known what he was doing.”
Ms Wass said the actor had shown “terrifying behaviour” that made Heard “fear for her life” on multiple occasions.
And she argued that Depp’s argument that no one had witnessed the assaults was not enough, saying: “Domestic violence, as the name suggests, takes place behind closed doors, in the home, in private, and it takes place against the backdrop of a complex relationship.”
The three-week trial has seen the exhaustive questioning of witnesses – including Depp himself who spent about 20 hours giving evidence.
The actor is not in court today, while ex Amber, 34, arrived with her trademark red scarf in hand as she arrived inside.
Depp, 57, is suing The Sun for referring to him as a “wife-beater” in a 2018 article. The Sun, supported by Heard, says the term was justified.
But Ms Wass claimed that despite Depp insisting he was a “Southern gentleman”, he had referred to women as “sl*ts” and “fat ugly w***es”
Today, the court is due to hear closing submissions – with Justice Nicol expected to hand down his verdict in about three months.
Last night, Heard stepped out to dinner to Scott’s restaurant in London along with partner Bianca Butti and her sister Whitney Henriquez, who have both supported her throughout the trial.
The High Court has heard shocking details of the couple’s relationship and its breakdown with claims Depp even allegedly attacked his then wife on their honeymoon.
The actor is alleged to have also lashed out at Heard after arriving at her 30th birthday celebrations late after finding out he lost $650million.
It was then claimed excrement was found in the couple’s marital bed – with Heard denying Depp’s allegations she had left the deposit.
Over the past three weeks, The High Court has heard explosive claims including:
- Johnny Depp allegedly attacked Amber Heard 14 times over three years during their relationship
- Depp smeared ‘i love you’ on a mirror with his bloodied finger after it was cut during one furious bust-up in Australia
- Faeces was found in the couple’s bed after they rowed when Depp was late to his then wife’s 30th birthday
- The Edward Scissorhands actor has claimed Heard’s allegations are a ‘hoax’ built up over the years as an ‘insurance policy’
Photographs of a number of apartments ripped apart after alleged bust-ups were also shown to the court as part of the lengthy trial.
A picture of a mirror smeared with blood and the message ‘I love you’ – allegedly written by Depp after his finger was severed during a row in Australia – was shown.
Shattered glass was also photographed at the couple’s LA penthouse after Depp’s alleged “final act of violence” before they split.
High profile names were also dragged intro the trial as claims that Depp was paranoid his then wife was having an affair with SpaceX billionaire Elon Musk and James Franco.
However, Depp’s former partners Winona Ryder and Vanessa Paradis did not give evidence after submitting witness statements that the star had never been violent towards them.
