Boris Johnson said he does not want to impose another national lockdown, but the Government is aiming to tackle outbreaks with local measures.

It comes after some metropolitan areas in the North of England saw their measures tightened last week in order to contain further spread of the virus.

But with infections rising in some areas, are there plans for a second national lockdown in the UK?

Will there be a second lockdown in the UK?

Currently, there are no plans to put the whole country on lockdown again.

However, Boris Johnson has said up to 30 places could end up in need of further restrictions.

Speaking on Sky News, the PM said: “There are between ten and 30 places where you are seeing it bubbling up a little bit.

“I think the country as a whole understands that the best way to deal with this is if we have tough local lockdowns to get it under control in those towns.”

The PM and Chancellor Rishi Sunak met last week to to run through possible options for averting another nationwide lockdown should there be another wave of coronavirus infections.

Mr Johnson is said to be considering new measures after a rise in Covid-19 cases forced him to delay further lockdown easing last Friday.

According to the Sunday Times, measures under consideration include asking older people to shield once again and lockdown-like conditions for London should there be a second wave.

The Sunday Telegraph reported that under the proposals, a greater number of people would be asked to take part in the shielding programme, based on their age or particular risk factors that have been identified since March.

What areas of the UK have gone back into lockdown?

Local restrictions have been imposed in some parts of the UK after a spike in Covid-19 infections.

People in some parts of Greater Manchester, Lancashire, West Yorkshire and Leicester are not allowed to meet others inside their home or garden, unless they have formed a support bubble.

It is also not allowed to socialise with people outside of your own household in other indoor public venues, such as pubs, restaurants or places of worship.
