Coronavirus UK news LIVE: Eat Out to Help Out scheme launches TODAY as deaths hit 46,201

BRITS can bag half price meals at pubs, restaurants and cafes as the new Eat Out to Help scheme launches today.

From today, the government will foot half the bill, up to £10 per head, for your meal and any soft drinks on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout the month.

Around 75,000 restaurants have so far signed up to the Eat Out To Help Out Scheme, and millions are expected to dine out from today.

The meal deal scheme is expected to cost the nation £500million, but the hospitality industry £39billion in tax annually in normal times.

It comes following a breakthrough in coronavirus testing, with a new on-the-spot kit returning results in just 60-90 minutes.

The new on-the-spot tests analyse nose swabs and can magnify any active virus particle, and there is no need for a fixed lab or medics.

It comes as the coronavirus death toll rose to 46,201, while there were 744 new cases of the virus.
